ABOUT US

"The greatest sign of success for a teacher...is to be able to say, the children are now working as if I did not exist."

Virginia Center for Montessori Studies (VCMS) is a division of West End Montessori School, Inc.  VCMS is affiliated with the American Montessori Society (AMS), accredited by the Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE) and certified by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV).

VCMS seeks to provide a teacher education program which honors the authentic Montessori method of education.  Students are provided with an intellectual, practical and spiritual exploration of Montessori philosophy and methodology.  A blend of theory and hands on experience leads students to discover for themselves the underlying truths of the Montessori approach.

VCMS offers a Montessori teacher education program which leads to AMS teacher certification at the Early Childhood level (ages 2.5 through 6).  The course cycle runs for one year; students may opt to complete the course requirements in one or two years.

There are also opportunities throughout the year for assistants to participate in a one-day Early Childhood Assistant Teacher Course at which an overview of Montessori philosophy and methodology is presented along with an exploration of effective and respectful classroom management techniques, the curriculum areas, guidelines for working with the materials and professional interaction with parents and school staff.
